The Murray runs through the middle of it, the state line runs with the river, and a container going into a Lavington back yard and the same container going into a Wodonga back yard are answerable to different councils even though the two blocks are ten minutes apart. That is worth knowing before you order rather than after. The road side is comparatively kind: the Hume runs straight past, the freight and rail precinct north of town is built for heavy vehicles, and access is rarely the hard part.

The access problem in this district
Albury does not throw many hard access problems, and where it does they cluster in three places. The first is the river country. Blocks running down toward the Murray and along the anabranches at Thurgoona, Table Top and out toward Howlong sit on sandy river loam and old flood deposits between stands of river red gum. That soil drains fast, looks solid and softens under a rear axle without much warning, and the big gums drop limbs and hang low enough over a track to catch a raised tilt bed. The second is the hill country on the western edge — Nail Can and the ridges behind West Albury — where granite outcrops mean short, steep driveways with rock ledge under them, so the block is firm but very rarely level. That is a good problem to have, provided we know before we send a tilt-tray to a driveway that pitches away at the kerb. The third is winter mornings. Frost is heavy here from May through August and it lifts a surface overnight, so a gravel driveway or a paddock track that carried a truck yesterday afternoon can be greasy at eight this morning, and river fog can hold a start back an hour or two. We will often book a mid-morning slot on rural addresses through winter for exactly that reason. Around town, the older streets in East and North Albury have short pitched driveways, mature street trees and narrow side gates, while the newer estates at Thurgoona and Springdale Heights bring the standard estate list: tight carriageways, cars parked both sides, service pits and stormwater grates on the kerb line that a loaded axle will crack, and cut-and-fill blocks with thin turf over ground that has not settled. Photos from the street and of the spot itself sort nearly all of it out before a truck leaves.

Two states, one town
The border is the local peculiarity you cannot ignore. Albury sits in New South Wales, Wodonga in Victoria, and the two councils take their own view on how long a container can stay on a residential block, whether it can be seen from the street, and what happens if you alter it. Newer estates on either side may add a covenant on top that is stricter again. We are not going to guess at the rule for your street, and anybody who tells you the answer without asking which side of the river you are on is not paying attention.
What is consistent is the shape of the question. Is it temporary or permanent. Is it visible from the road. Is it storage or a conversion. Does the estate or body corporate have anything to say. Sort that before delivery, because moving a container twenty metres after the fact is a second delivery, not an adjustment. Sited behind the building line, screened by a fence or planting, level and clear of a drainage path keeps almost everybody comfortable regardless of which state you are in.

Frost, fog and a sweating roof
Albury gets proper winters, and a sealed steel box in a frost climate collects moisture on the inside of its roof overnight. The air inside cools, the moisture in it condenses on the coldest surface, and by morning it drips. People blame the roof. It is almost never the roof. Cartons go soft, tools spot with surface rust and anything with paper on it takes up damp, all without a drop of rain getting in.
It is easy to design out. Vents at each end so air moves through instead of sitting. Pads under the corners so the floor is not in contact with damp ground wicking moisture upward. Load dry, leave a gap between the stack and the walls so air can circulate around it, and run a couple of moisture absorbers through the coldest months. If you are converting the container into a workshop, an office or a store for anything that needs a stable environment, insulate the ceiling — that keeps the steel above dew point and stops the problem happening rather than managing it afterwards.

Reaching the smaller towns
A lot of what we send to the Albury area does not stop in Albury. Jindera, Howlong, Corowa, Holbrook, Culcairn, Walla Walla, Henty and the properties in between are all part of the same run, and because those addresses are already off the highway the extra distance matters much less than the last few hundred metres does. What we need for a property drop is the same short list every time: the state of the driveway and when it last rained, whether there is a grid and what it might carry, the gate width at its narrowest, and whether there is genuinely truck-sized turning space at the far end.
Where any of that is doubtful, setting the container down on firm ground near the road and letting you walk it in with a tractor at your own pace is a perfectly respectable answer and often the quickest. A crane truck standing near the road can also place a unit further in than a tilt-tray could reach. Both beat committing a loaded truck to a driveway it cannot back out of, which is the one outcome nobody recovers a good day from.

Do the rules differ for a container in Albury versus Wodonga?
They can, and that is the thing to check before you order rather than afterwards. Albury sits under a New South Wales council and Wodonga under a Victorian one, and they take their own positions on how long a container can stay, whether it is visible from the road and whether it has been altered. Estate covenants add another layer on either side. We will not guess at your street. The reliable pattern is that temporary, screened and used for storage is the easy end, and permanent, prominent and modified is where questions start.
How long does a container take to reach Albury?
Seven to twelve business days is the honest window. Will a container be alright sitting under river red gums on a Murray block?
The container will. The delivery needs thought, because those gums hang low over tracks and drop limbs without much notice, and a tilt-tray needs vertical clearance for a raised bed rather than just enough room to drive under. Once it is in place, keep leaf litter swept off the roof — wet leaves held against a panel are what starts surface corrosion, far more than weather does — and keep the grass down around the base so moisture is not trapped against the steel.
Can I get photos of the container before it is sent down?
Yes, and on a run this length it is the sensible thing to do. Ask at the quote and we will send photos of the actual unit on request before delivery — the corners, the door end, the roof and the internal floor, so there is nothing to argue about when the truck arrives. The walk-around yard is at Cornubia in south-east Queensland, which is not a realistic trip from the border for most people.
