What has to be right before the truck books
Gympie divides into ridge and river, and the two want different trucks. The high ground — Victory Heights, Jones Hill, The Palms, the top end of Monkland — is where most of the housing sits, and it got that way because the flats were never a safe bet. Those streets were pushed through gullies and the driveways come off them at a pitch a car takes without noticing and a loaded tilt-tray does not. Where a drive drops sharply at the kerb, the back of the bed touches bitumen before the container has slid clear. Where it crests halfway up, the same thing happens in the middle instead of at the start. On a lot of those blocks the sensible answer is to lift over the fence from the street rather than try to back in. The old town on the flat is the opposite complaint: short frontages, side accesses set out long before anyone owned a car, and fifty years of fig and camphor laurel hanging over the road at exactly truck height. Out through the Mary Valley it turns rural again — Kandanga, Amamoor, Imbil, Widgee, Glastonbury — with unsealed drives that have a crown and table drains, private grids nobody can put a rating to, and turning space at the far end that needs to be real rather than hopeful. Ground varies enormously over short distances here. Down on the flats it is river silt, firm in September and treacherous a week into February. Up on the ridges it is shallow soil over rock, which carries anything you like and is almost never level. Neither stops a delivery, but both change how the unit gets bedded down. What actually protects your gear is height and position. Pick the highest ground you can genuinely use, even if it means a longer walk from the back door with an armful of gear. Stay off the line water takes when it runs across the block, because around here a gully going hard does as much harm as the river coming up. If it has to live on low ground, we can set it up on a raised pad or on blocks so the floor sits well clear and the underside stays ventilated, and we can talk about anchoring so it does not travel if it ever gets buoyant. And think about what goes where inside it. Shelving at chest height is worth a great deal more than floor space for anything you would be upset to lose.
