Shipping containers Perth

Perth runs on its own supply and it pays to understand what that means. The stock we sell here sits at a depot in Fremantle, because carting a container across the Nullarbor costs more than any sensible person would want to pay for a steel box. Two things follow. What is standing in Fremantle this week is what you can actually have this week, so ringing early is worth more in Perth than in any other city we serve. And once it is yours, the run out to almost any metropolitan address is short, flat and quick.

The short version, before the detail.

The jobs they turn up on locally

Around Perth we deliver containers for lock-up storage on the big new lots at Alkimos, Yanchep, Baldivis and Byford, tool and plant stores for the trades and mining services businesses at Kwinana, Naval Base, Bibra Lake, Malaga and Henderson, somewhere for a shed's worth of gear while people work away on a swing roster, boat, dive and camping storage where the garage was full three years ago, dry storage for market gardeners and small growers on the Wanneroo and Gnangara sands, feed, tack and machinery storage on the hills blocks through Roleystone, Chidlow and Gidgegannup, and vineyard and equipment storage out through the Swan Valley.

The delivery problem here

Perth is one of the more forgiving capitals to drive a truck around and one of the less forgiving to stand a container on. The metropolitan roads are wide, the grid is generous, the estates are newer and there is very little of the constricted inner-city street pattern that makes the eastern capitals difficult. Then you get to the block. Almost all of Perth sits on the Swan Coastal Plain, which is sand — Bassendean sand through the inland suburbs, and Spearwood sand over Tamala limestone as you move toward the coast. Dry sand carries almost nothing. A loaded truck will sit its rear duals into a nature strip that looked entirely solid, and a corner casting concentrating a couple of tonne will disappear into thin turf inside a season. Nearer the coast, from Scarborough and Trigg down through Cottesloe, Fremantle and Coogee, limestone often sits close to the surface, which is excellent bearing but rarely level and stubborn to dig a pad into. Wind is the other thing that is genuinely local. Through the warmer months the sea breeze comes in off the Indian Ocean from around the middle of the day and it comes in with real force. A container hanging off a crane is a large flat sail, so afternoon lifts on exposed coastal blocks are the ones that get moved to the morning, and we would rather schedule around that than argue with it on site. Inland and up on the scarp the day runs the other way, with dry heat, dust and firm ground for most of the year. The Darling Scarp is the third factor. Kalamunda, Gooseberry Hill, Roleystone, Bickley, Mundaring and the Chidlow side are steep, winding and narrow, with granite outcrops, tall jarrah and marri canopy over the road and driveways cut hard into the fall. A 20ft goes up there comfortably. A 40ft needs the approach and the turning space checked before anyone commits a truck to a climb it may have to reverse back down.

Grade moves the price more than size does, and it is what decides whether a unit is sold watertight — the full rundown is on the grades page.

The range

Containers we deliver to Perth

Priced with delivery to your address - one call, one number.

10ft Shipping Containers

Side access is pinched, the setback leaves nothing to manoeuvre in, or all that is needed is a lockable spot for the mower, an air compressor and a wall of hand tools.

20ft Shipping Containers

There is about seven metres of straight, reasonably level ground for it to sit on, and you would rather not discover in half a year that the bigger box was the answer.

40ft Shipping Containers

You have the space, the approach is genuinely open, and the aim is the largest amount of storage per dollar spent that anybody sells.

Perth

Why Perth stock is Perth stock

It is worth being straight about how supply works on this side of the country, because it changes how you should approach buying. There is no realistic way to shuttle a container over from the east for an individual customer — the cartage across the Nullarbor is a large multiple of what the box is worth, and anyone who tells you otherwise is quietly building it into a number somewhere. So what we sell in Perth is what is on the ground at our Fremantle depot. In practice the range is good and covers the common sizes and grades. What it does not do is respond instantly to an unusual request, so if you want something specific — a particular height, a door configuration, a set number of matching units for a project — start the conversation two or three weeks out rather than two or three days.

The upside of a single local holding point is that everything after the phone call is short. Fremantle to Joondalup, Armadale, Midland or Rockingham is an easy run on good roads, and the whole metropolitan area is reachable inside a morning. Inspection at Fremantle is by arrangement rather than a walk-in, because it is a working depot with machines moving all day. Ring, tell us what you are after, and we will set a time when someone can walk you to the unit and open it up for you. If a trip across town is not practical, ask and we will send photos of the actual container on request before delivery. Give us a couple of days' notice for an inspection and it is straightforward to organise.

On the ground

Sand, limestone and four corners at the same height

Perth ground is the reason a container goes wrong here, and it is entirely preventable. On sand the problem is bearing. The unit puts everything it weighs through four castings, and sand simply moves out of the way underneath them — unevenly, because one corner will always find a looser pocket than the others. Within a season the frame is out of square and the doors have started to bind. Concrete pads or hardwood sleepers under the four corners, bedded down into firm sand rather than sitting on the surface, spread that load and settle the question for good. On limestone country the issue is the opposite. The bearing is superb and the ground will not oblige you by being flat, so the right approach is to pack the low side up to meet the high side rather than trying to chip the high side down, which only ever produces a channel for water to sit in.

Either way, get the floor a hundred millimetres or so off the ground so air moves underneath, hang the door end off the high side of any fall so the doors are not fighting the slope, and keep the grass down around the bottom rail. On the coastal strip that last one matters more than most people expect: it is long wet grass and leaf litter holding moisture against the steel that starts surface corrosion, far more than salt air on its own. Tell us what the ground is at the quote and we will bring the packing on the truck and level it as part of the delivery. Done properly on the day it lands, that setup never needs revisiting for the life of the container.

Worth knowing

Up the scarp, out to the country

The hills are the one part of metropolitan Perth where the size question needs settling before anything else. The climbs to Kalamunda, Gooseberry Hill, Roleystone and Mundaring are narrow and winding with granite either side, low jarrah and marri limbs across the carriageway and driveways that fall away hard off a road with no shoulder to speak of. A truck that cannot make a bend up there has to reverse a long way downhill, and a container that will not fit through a gate at the top has to go all the way back to Fremantle. Five minutes with an aerial view of the drive and the gate, and one photo taken from the gate looking back down the road, heads off nearly all of that. A 20ft is the sensible workhorse for hills blocks; where the length really is needed, a pair of 20ft units butted together beats forcing a 40ft up a road that does not want one.

Beyond the metropolitan area the same logic applies with distance added. The Peel region, the Avon Valley, the Wheatbelt and the south-west are all serviced, but those runs are scheduled around the route rather than dropped into a day, so a hard date needs saying at the enquiry rather than confirming later. Farm and rural-residential deliveries bring the usual list of things worth mentioning up front: the gate width measured at its narrowest point rather than at the posts, any grid and whether anyone knows what it is rated to, the state of the driveway surface, powerlines to a pump shed or a house, and whether there is genuine truck-sized turning room at the far end. Tell us those at the booking and it is a non-event.

What delivery to Perth costs

There is no flat delivery rate here worth publishing. What the truck has to do at your end changes it too much, so we quote it per job.

Tell us the date you actually need it, not the date that sounds polite. It changes which depot the unit comes out of.

More of the region

We also deliver to Fremantle, Joondalup, Rockingham, Mandurah, Midland and the surrounding district. If your town is not on the list, ring — it almost certainly still works.

Common questions

Buying a container in Perth

Can I inspect a container in Perth before buying it?

Yes, by arrangement. Our Perth stock is held at a depot in Fremantle, and because it is a working yard with machinery moving all day it is not somewhere you can simply turn up and wander through. Ring us, tell us the size and grade you are looking at, and we will book a time when someone can take you to the unit, open the doors and let you look down the floor and check the seals properly. If getting across town is not practical, we will send photos of the actual container on request before delivery — corners, door end, roof and internal floor.

How long does delivery take in Perth?

Three to seven business days is the usual window, and where it lands in that range depends mostly on what is standing at Fremantle when you order. Once the unit is allocated, the run to a metropolitan address is short. What stretches it out is a crane booking, a request for something less common in size or configuration, or a delivery beyond the metro that has to be scheduled around a route. If you are working to a fixed date, say so at the enquiry — with Perth supply being local and finite, early notice is genuinely the thing that gets you what you want.

Will a container sink into sand on a Perth block?

Placed straight onto sand or thin turf it will go down unevenly, because every casting drives its share of the load into a patch the size of a dinner plate and sand does very little to resist it. Concrete pads or hardwood sleepers under the four corners, bedded into firm sand rather than laid on the surface and checked level on both diagonals, fix it permanently for very little money. Closer to the coast where limestone sits near the surface, the bearing is excellent but the ground is uneven, so the right approach is to pack the low side up rather than cut the high side away.

Can you deliver up to Kalamunda, Roleystone or out to the Swan Valley?

Regularly. The Swan Valley is flat, open and about as easy as delivery gets. The scarp is a different proposition — narrow winding climbs, granite, low jarrah canopy over the road and steep driveways cut into the fall — so the size question is worth settling before you order. A 20ft goes up comfortably. A 40ft needs the approach, the gate and the turning space checked first, and on some of those roads two 20ft is the better answer. Send us the address and a photo from your gate looking back toward the road and we will give you a straight answer.
