Side access is pinched, the setback leaves nothing to manoeuvre in, or all that is needed is a lockable spot for the mower, an air compressor and a wall of hand tools.
Moranbah, QLD
Everything about a Moranbah delivery is shaped by two things: the Peak Downs Highway, and whether the far end is a mine gate or a house. Stock comes from our Mackay depot, which means the Eton Range climb, then Nebo, then the run out across the Bowen Basin. That part is routine. The gate is where jobs go sideways, because a laydown area inside a mine lease is not a driveway you can just back into, and none of the paperwork can be sorted out with a driver already sitting at the boom.
Worth knowing before you order.
Around Moranbah we deliver containers for tool cribs, consumables and spares storage in contractor laydown yards, secure lock-ups staged for shutdown crews who need everything in one place for a fixed window, dust-proof storage for filters, hoses, fittings and rigging gear, overflow storage for the camps and accommodation villages around town, gear storage for trades and small businesses working out of the Moranbah industrial area, and household and site storage on the residential streets where a garage lost the argument to a boat and a work ute.
In town, Moranbah is a straightforward delivery. It is a planned town, the streets are wide, the blocks are regular and there is room for a rigid truck to stand and set up out the front of most houses. The industrial area has proper frontages and hardstand. The complications are elsewhere. The run in from Mackay climbs the Eton Range, which is a serious piece of road for a loaded truck and is subject to restrictions and closures from time to time, and it is one of the reasons we quote a window rather than a morning. Through the wet season the Peak Downs Highway and the roads around Nebo can go under, and when that happens nothing moves inland until they open. On the mine and contractor side, access is a process rather than a turn-off. Site induction requirements, a gate register, PPE, a nominated delivery window, a light vehicle escort from the gate to the laydown area, sometimes a permit for the vehicle itself. Laydown yards are often tighter than they look on a plan, with lay-down stacks, containers already in place and no straight run for a tilt bed, which is why a crane truck is frequently the sensible option out there rather than a tilt. Ground is the last piece. The Bowen Basin gives you heavy black soil in the flats and red gravel country on the rises. Both are excellent when dry. The black soil is a genuine problem after rain and stays soft long after the surface has crusted over, so a laydown area that looks fine can still be soft two hundred millimetres down. Tell us where the container is going, who controls the gate and what the surface is, and the job goes in first time.
Grade moves the price more than size does, and it is what decides whether a unit is sold watertight — the full rundown is on the grades page.
The range
Priced with delivery to your address - one call, one number.
Side access is pinched, the setback leaves nothing to manoeuvre in, or all that is needed is a lockable spot for the mower, an air compressor and a wall of hand tools.
There is about seven metres of straight, reasonably level ground for it to sit on, and you would rather not discover in half a year that the bigger box was the answer.
You have the space, the approach is genuinely open, and the aim is the largest amount of storage per dollar spent that anybody sells.
Moranbah
Containers for Moranbah come out of our Mackay depot rather than from the south-east, which is a good deal shorter than most people assume and is the main reason a four to eight business day window is realistic here. The route is the Peak Downs Highway, up the Eton Range and out through Nebo. It is a well-used freight corridor, but it is also a road that is affected by weather and by works, and the range section in particular is not somewhere anyone rushes a loaded truck. Roadworks along that corridor are close to a permanent feature and they cost time rather than stopping the job, which is part of why we quote a window instead of an hour. The other part is that the last leg is often inside somebody else's gate, and gates run to their own timetable.
The wet season is the honest variable. Through the summer months the highway and the roads around Nebo can close, and there is nothing to be done about that except plan for it. If your container is tied to a shutdown, a contract mobilisation or a crew arriving, order early enough that a week of weather does not sink the schedule. Inspection at Mackay is by arrangement rather than walk-in, so ring 1300 467 776 first if you want eyes on a unit before it travels. Photographs of the actual container are the alternative, available on request and sent before delivery. Order early and a wet week becomes an inconvenience rather than the reason a crew stands around waiting on somewhere to put their gear.
On the ground
A shutdown is exactly the sort of job a container was made for and exactly the sort of job that goes wrong when the container is ordered late. The requirement is short, defined and immovable: everything in one lockable place, on site, from a fixed date, gone again afterwards. Hire suits that shape perfectly, because the asset is off your books the moment the crew demobilises and getting it off site is somebody else's job. Buying makes more sense where the container is going to live in a contractor yard permanently and serve one job after another. Where a run of shutdowns is coming through over a season, it is worth asking about a longer hire rather than making the same booking three times, since the container can simply stay put between them.
What actually determines whether the delivery happens on the day is the gate, not the truck. Site inductions, PPE requirements, a gate register, a nominated delivery window, an escort from the gate to the laydown area and in some cases a vehicle permit are all standard, and every one of them is straightforward when arranged in advance and impossible when discovered at seven in the morning. Give us the site contact, the requirements and the window at the booking. If the laydown area is tight or already stacked, tell us that too, because it is often the difference between sending a tilt-tray and sending a crane truck. Sites also have their own quiet windows, and landing inside one of those beats arriving at shift change by a long way.
Worth knowing
Bowen Basin ground has two settings. In the dry it is hard, dusty and will carry anything you drive across it, and the only real issue is that fine red and black dust gets into everything not behind a seal, which is a large part of why so much gear out here lives in a container in the first place. In the wet the black soil flats go to grease and stay soft well below a surface that has crusted over and looks solid. A laydown area or a house block that reads as firm can still bog a loaded truck, and once a truck is down in Bowen Basin black soil it is a serious recovery. It is a day nobody gets back, and it usually takes a decent piece of the laydown surface with it.
For the container itself, the same soil movement applies as anywhere on cracking clay. It swells and shrinks through the year and it does it unevenly, so a unit sitting straight on the dirt will settle a corner at a time until the doors stop lining up. Sleepers or concrete pads under each corner casting, levelled across both diagonals, deal with it permanently. Where the container is going into a laydown that already has hardstand, that is easier again and worth using. Tell us the surface at the quote and we will bring what we need to set it up properly on the day. It costs a great deal less than lifting a container back off a bad footing six months later, when everything inside has to come out first.
We quote delivery with the container every time. It is the honest way to do it when access varies as much as it does around here.
A two-minute conversation about the site usually saves a second delivery fee later.
We also deliver to Dysart, Nebo, Middlemount, Glenden, Clermont and the surrounding district. If your town is not on the list, ring — it almost certainly still works.
Common questions
Four to eight business days is the normal window. Stock comes from our Mackay depot up the Peak Downs Highway over the Eton Range and through Nebo, which is shorter than most people expect. The two things that stretch it are wet season weather closing the highway or the roads around Nebo, and site access requirements that need arranging before the truck can be booked. If you are working to a shutdown date, order early.
Yes, and it is regular work, but the site requirements have to reach us before the truck is booked. Inductions, PPE, a gate register, a nominated delivery window, an escort from the gate and sometimes a vehicle permit are all normal. None of it can be arranged with a driver already parked at a boom gate. Give us the site contact and the access requirements at the booking, and tell us how much room there is in the laydown, since a tight or already stacked yard usually means a crane truck rather than a tilt-tray.
Hire, in almost every case. A shutdown has a defined start and finish, so hiring keeps the container off your asset register once the crew demobilises and leaves the removal to us rather than to you. Buying makes sense where the container is going to sit permanently in a contractor yard and serve one job after another. Give us the window when you enquire and it gets quoted the way the job actually runs.
That is one of the main reasons people out here use them. Cargo-worthy units are checked wind and watertight before we load them, and with the doors shut and the seals in good order they keep fine dust off filters, hoses, fittings and rigging far better than a shed with a roller door. Two things help: keep the door seals clean rather than letting grit build up in them, and have vents fitted so the box can breathe without leaving a door propped open.
