Shipping containers Hervey Bay

Nothing about the run to Hervey Bay is hard. It is flat, it is sealed, and a truck gets from the Bruce to Urangan without meeting a hill worth mentioning. The whole job is the last thirty metres, and it is nearly always one of two things: sand that carries far less than it looks like it will, or a village or estate road built to a scale that stops at a removalist truck. Sort those two out at the quote and a Hervey Bay delivery is a quiet twenty minutes.

First, the things that are specific to here.

What locals buy them for

Around Hervey Bay we deliver containers for boat, tinnie and trailer storage where a double garage was never going to hold the van as well, caravan gear and annexes packed away between trips, fishing and crabbing kit for the Great Sandy Strait crowd, downsizers storing a lifetime of a Melbourne or Sydney house while a smaller place gets sorted out, trade storage for the builders working the new estates at Eli Waters, Nikenbah and Urraween, dry storage on the acreage through Dundowran, Takura and Craignish, and gear stores for the tour, charter and hire operators running out of Urangan.

Access, ground and the last thirty metres

Sand is the through-line here. From Point Vernon around through Pialba, Scarness, Torquay and Urangan the profile is coastal sand over a water table that is not far down, and it behaves the same way everywhere: it drains beautifully, it carries badly, and it looks solid right up until a loaded rear axle proves it is not. A truck can sit down to the diffs on a nature strip that a car park on all winter. Behind the strip the newer estates at Eli Waters, Kawungan and Nikenbah are cut and filled, and eighteen-month-old fill under thin turf is its own kind of soft. Further out toward Booral, Dundowran Beach and Craignish it goes to sand over coffee rock in places, which is firm as concrete in one spot and hollow two metres away. None of it is a reason not to deliver. It is a reason to bring something to spread the load and to know before the truck is committed. The second constraint is the shape of the place. Hervey Bay has a lot of over-50s and lifestyle villages, and the internal roads in those are narrow, speed-humped, tightly radiused and often gated with a height bar. A rigid truck carrying six metres of container past the rear axle does not swing through a village turning circle designed for a courier van. Body corporate notice, a booked window and a manager who knows you are coming make the difference between an easy job and a truck sitting at the boom gate. The older bayside blocks at Point Vernon and Torquay bring narrow side gates, established figs and low service lines across the frontage, which usually means lifting over rather than backing in. And it is worth saying that half the district is retired and quiet on a weekday morning, so a bit of warning to the neighbours about the noise costs nothing and buys goodwill.

Grade moves the price more than size does, and it is what decides whether a unit is sold watertight — the full rundown is on the grades page.

The range

Containers we deliver to Hervey Bay

Priced with delivery to your address - one call, one number.

10ft Shipping Containers

Side access is pinched, the setback leaves nothing to manoeuvre in, or all that is needed is a lockable spot for the mower, an air compressor and a wall of hand tools.

20ft Shipping Containers

There is about seven metres of straight, reasonably level ground for it to sit on, and you would rather not discover in half a year that the bigger box was the answer.

40ft Shipping Containers

You have the space, the approach is genuinely open, and the aim is the largest amount of storage per dollar spent that anybody sells.

Hervey Bay

Why sand needs something under the corners

A container puts everything it weighs, plus everything you load into it, down through four small steel castings at the corners. That is a lot of tonnage arriving on four dinner-plate-sized patches of ground. Straight onto Hervey Bay sand, or onto turf with sand under it, none of that load spreads out. It punches down, and it does not punch down evenly, because no block is uniform. What you get a season later is a unit sitting out of square, and the first thing that tells you is the doors — one starts to catch, then it takes a shoulder, then it takes two people. The frame is racked at that point and getting it back is a lift, not an adjustment.

The fix costs almost nothing and it is done at delivery. Bearers or pads set under each casting, bedded down onto something firm and checked across both diagonals, spread the load wide enough that the sand can hold it. On the coastal strip we like to get the floor a hundred millimetres or more clear of the ground as well, because the water table is shallow and a steel floor sitting hard against damp sand for a decade is where problems start from underneath rather than from the roof. It also makes the unit far easier to pick up and shift later, which matters if you ever sell the place or rearrange the yard — a unit that has bedded itself down into wet sand needs digging out before anybody can get a chain on it. Mention the ground when you enquire and the materials come on the truck with the container.

On the ground

Villages, estates and the boom gate

A large slice of Hervey Bay lives behind a gate, and delivering into a lifestyle village or a body corporate estate is a scheduling problem more than a driving one. The pattern is consistent: management wants notice and a nominated time, they will want the transport operator to hold insurance, and they may have a preferred route through the site that avoids the narrow section past the clubhouse. Internal roads are built to a domestic scale, so speed humps, tight corner radii and a turning circle at the end of a cul-de-sac that suits a garbage truck and nothing longer all come into it. Height bars on the entry are common and they are not negotiable on the day, and a boom gate that has been set for visitor parking will not simply lift for a truck because it has arrived.

None of that is difficult, but it has to happen a week out rather than on the morning. Get the approval in hand, get a window, then let us build a run around it. Where the internal roads genuinely will not take a truck with a container behind the cab, the workable answer is often a crane truck standing outside the boundary and lifting in, or a smaller unit than you first had in mind. A 10ft on a village lot does more than people expect and it goes places a 20ft cannot, and on a courtyard site it is frequently the only size that leaves you room to open the doors afterwards. Tell us at the enquiry that it is a village or estate address and we will ask the right questions rather than finding out at the gate.

Worth knowing

Hire when the need has an end date

A lot of what we do here runs on a calendar. Somebody sells up down south, arrives with a full container of furniture and needs it somewhere secure for four months while a build finishes. A charter or hire operator wants gear locked away between the whale season and the next one. A builder needs somewhere lockable on a job at Kawungan for as long as the program runs and not one day past handover. Hire fits all of those, because nobody wants to be advertising a second-hand container in June, and the truck at the far end is our problem rather than yours. If the job changes shape halfway through, a hire unit can be traded for a different size, which is not an option once you own one.

Buying starts to win the moment nobody can say when the need finishes, or where the unit turns into part of the furniture — a permanent store on an acreage block at Takura, a lock-up on a leased yard. If it is going to sit outdoors in salt air all year with anything in it you want kept dry, ask us for cargo-worthy, which is checked wind and watertight before it leaves the yard. The grades page sets out what the differences actually are, and it is worth two minutes before you decide on price alone. The other thing worth weighing is what happens at the end. A bought 20ft in reasonable condition holds its value in this district, and there is a genuine second-hand market on the Fraser Coast when you are finished with it, which takes some of the sting out of the decision either way.

What delivery to Hervey Bay costs

The cartage component depends on which depot the unit comes out of and what the site needs. We work it out with the quote.

We would rather ask two more questions on the phone than send the wrong container up the road.

More of the region

We also deliver to Urangan, Pialba, Torquay, Burrum Heads, Howard and the surrounding district. If your town is not on the list, ring — it almost certainly still works.

Common questions

Buying a container in Hervey Bay

Will a container sink into sandy ground at Torquay or Urangan?

Not evenly, which is the problem. Sand and thin turf cannot spread the load that four corner castings put into them, so one corner goes down further than the others and the doors start telling you about it within a season or two. Bearers or pads underneath each casting, bedded down and checked across both diagonals, deal with it for good and lift the floor clear of a shallow water table at the same time. Describe the ground when you ring and the materials come out on the truck with the container.

Can you deliver into an over-50s village or gated estate in Hervey Bay?

Yes, and it happens often, but it needs organising rather than just booking. Management will generally want written notice, a nominated delivery window and evidence of insurance from the transport operator, and there may be a height bar at the entry or a route through the site that avoids the tightest corners. Sort the approval and the window out first, then ring us with it. Where the internal roads will not take a truck with a container on the back, a crane lift from outside the boundary or a smaller unit usually solves it.

Can you get a container across to K'gari?

That last leg goes on a barge, and what a barge will carry — length, weight, how it loads and when it runs — is the operator's call, not ours. We sort that out with them while we are pricing your job, so you end up with a single figure rather than a container price and a vague wave toward the water. We deliberately keep timetables off this page, because those arrangements move and a stale web page costs you a morning standing at a ramp. A 20ft travels and places far more easily over there than a 40ft.

How long does delivery to Hervey Bay take?

Three to five business days is the usual window from order. A plain 20ft heading to a block with an easy approach sits at the short end of that. It stretches out where a crane has to be booked, where we are waiting on a village delivery window, or where the grade or configuration you have asked for has to come up from our Cornubia yard. Where the date is locked in at your end — a handover, a truck full of furniture arriving, a season about to start — tell us when you ring and the run gets planned to suit it.
