Getting it onto the block
Start with the crossings. The irrigation network here is dense, and a lot of properties are reached over a private culvert or a narrow farm bridge whose load rating nobody has looked at since it went in. Orchard netting, hail structures, trellis wire, low sheds and the big old peppercorns along the older town streets all sit at exactly the height a tilt-tray bed wants when it is raised. And fourth, town itself. Central Shepparton and Mooroopna have older subdivisions with narrow drives and street trees, while Kialla, Shepparton North and Kialla Lakes have estate streets with kerbside service pits and parked cars either side. The practical answer on most orchards is to put the container on the headland or beside the shed rather than deep in the block, and to accept that the best spot for storage is usually the one nearest the hardstand you already have. If it genuinely has to go into the block, a crane truck can place it from the row end without driving in. Either way, tell us at the quote whether the block is netted, what the row spacing is, and whether the headland has been watered recently. We would rather send the right truck once than the wrong truck twice.
Worth knowing
After October 2022: siting on the floodplain
A lot of people around Shepparton and Mooroopna are storing things in containers now precisely because of what happened in October 2022, and it is worth being blunt about what a container does and does not do. It is a very good dry store. It is not a flood barrier. Water that reaches the door sill will get past the seals, and an empty container is a large sealed box that will float and move if the water gets deep enough. Anyone who tells you different is selling you something they should not.
What protects contents on a floodplain is height and position. Put it on the highest usable part of the block rather than the flattest. Keep it out of the overland flow path, because a lot of the damage in 2022 came from water running across properties rather than the river simply rising in place. If it is going to be a long-term store on low ground, talk to us about setting it up on blocks or a raised pad so the floor sits higher and the underside stays dry and ventilated — which is good practice on the valley's heavy soils anyway. And if what you are storing is genuinely irreplaceable, height beats every other decision you will make about it.
