Getting it onto the block
Dubbo delivery divides on soil type, and the boundary is not obvious from the road. On the red-brown earths on the higher ground the surface holds up well, drains quickly and takes a truck without much complaint even a day after rain. On the grey and black cracking clays out on the Macquarie flats and west toward Narromine it is a different story: dry, it is as good as bitumen; wet, it is grease that a loaded rigid truck will not steer on, let alone climb. There is no middle setting, so the timing of the delivery matters more here than almost anything else about it. Long private driveways are the second factor. Two to four hundred metres of gravel with a crown and table drains either side is comfortable in the dry, and after a wet week the crown greases up and one wheel into the drain means a tractor. Grids are the third: most were built out of whatever rail the last owner had, sized for a ute and a float, and there is rarely a plate on them. Say so if you do not know, and we will drop on firm ground near the road or bring a crane truck instead. Then the ordinary details that stop a truck all the same. Gates narrower at the swing than at the posts. Powerlines running out to a pump shed or a silo, at exactly the wrong height for a raised tilt bed. Old ironbarks and kurrajongs with limbs at four metres. Turning space at the far end that has to be real, because a tilt-tray needs to be lined up straight before it unloads and four hundred metres of reversing is nobody's afternoon. In town, the older grid streets around West Dubbo and the CBD fringe are workable but have kerbside parking, mature street trees and short driveways, and the newer estates on the edges bring narrow carriageways, service pits at the kerb line and fill that has not had a summer on it yet.

Dubbo has one real advantage over most inland towns: it is on the way to everywhere. The road network converges here, so a container heading west from the Grafton depot is on a run that would exist anyway rather than a dedicated trip made for one order. That is what keeps a six to ten business day window realistic instead of a fortnight, and it is why a flexible delivery date is worth something to you. If you can take the container in a window rather than on a named day, tell us — it often slots into a truck already coming this way.
The other side is that we will not pretend to a same-week turnaround we cannot make. Dubbo is a road run from the eastern seaboard, not a local yard job, and anyone promising you tomorrow is either guessing or has already loaded something for somebody else. If you have a hard date — a lease starting, a shed coming down, a contractor arriving — give it to us at the enquiry, and we will tell you honestly whether it fits the schedule.

Heat, dust and what goes inside
Summers out here are long and hot, and the inside of a closed steel box in a Dubbo February gets a lot hotter than the shade temperature. That is fine for machinery, steel, fencing gear, furniture and most of what people store. It is not fine for chemicals with a stated temperature range, some vet and animal health products, adhesives, paints, aerosols or anything electronic left in there through a summer. Whirlybirds or side vents move air through and make a real difference, and so does putting the container where it picks up afternoon shade rather than full western sun.
Dust is the other constant. Fine western dust will find any gap in a seal and settle on everything inside over a season. It is a good reason to spend the extra on a unit with sound door gaskets rather than the cheapest available, particularly if the contents are tools, feed or anything with a bearing in it. Cargo-worthy units are inspected wind and watertight before loading, and that same seal integrity is what keeps the dust out as well as the rain.
Worth knowing
The river, and where the container should sit
The Macquarie has come up over the flats more than once in recent memory, and people out here need no lecture on it. What is worth being plain about is what a container does and does not do. It is a very good store. It is not a flood barrier. Water reaching the door sill will get past the seals, and an empty container is a large sealed box that will lift and move if the water gets deep enough. Anybody selling you one on the strength of the water staying out is selling you something they should not.
So the useful conversation is siting. Put it on the highest usable part of the block rather than the flattest. Keep it out of the overland flow path, because a lot of damage on these flats comes from water running across country rather than from the river itself. If it is going to be a long-term store on low ground, set it up on blocks or a raised pad so the floor sits well clear and the underside stays dry and ventilated. Height is worth more than any other decision you will make about it.

Common questions
Buying a container in Dubbo
Can you deliver out to a property at Narromine, Trangie or Wellington?
Yes, and those runs go on the same western schedule as Dubbo itself. What we need to know is the state of the driveway, whether there is a grid and what it is rated for, gate widths at the narrowest point, and whether there is real turning space at the far end. On the black soil flats we also need to know when it last rained. Where the drive is doubtful, dropping the container on firm ground near the road for you to shift in with a tractor is a perfectly good answer and often the fastest one.
Why is delivery to Dubbo measured in a window rather than a day?
Because the container is carted west from our Grafton depot on a scheduled run rather than sitting in a yard here. Six to ten business days is the honest range, and it is shorter when your date is flexible enough to fit an existing run. A crane booking, wet ground on the clay country or a unit needing vents or a lockbox fitted will push it out. Tell us your date at the enquiry and we will say straight away whether it works.
Is a container a sensible place to store chemicals and animal health products out here?
For most farm chemicals and general supplies, yes — it is lockable, it keeps stock and children out, and it keeps dust and weather off. The catch is heat. A closed steel container in a Dubbo summer runs well above ambient, and anything with a storage temperature on the label needs shade, ventilation, or a different home. Vents help, siting for afternoon shade helps more. Follow the label rather than our advice on the specific product, but plan the airflow before delivery rather than after.
Can I inspect the container before it comes to Dubbo?
The walk-around yard is at 51–55 Bromley Street, Cornubia in south-east Queensland, which is not a practical drive from the central west. What we do instead is send photos of the actual unit on request, before delivery — the corners, the door end, the roof and the internal floor, so you are looking at the container you are getting rather than a stock photo. Ask for them at the quote and they come with it.
