Shipping containers Chinchilla

Two kinds of ground meet at Chinchilla and they behave nothing alike. The sandy rises carry a truck beautifully in any weather and then let a corner casting sink into them over a season. The brigalow and belah country either side is heavy clay that turns to soap after rain and will hold a bogged truck for two days while it dries out. Knowing which one your block sits on is worth more to us than any other single piece of information you can give us at the quote.

The work they do around here

Around Chinchilla we deliver containers for bin, pallet and packing gear storage on the melon country through Brigalow and Chinchilla itself, drum and chemical lock-ups on grain and cotton blocks, relocatable laydown and consumables storage for the gas field crews working the Surat Basin out toward Miles, Wandoan and Kogan, secure tool storage for the fitters, boilermakers and electricians running mobile workshops off utes and trailers, feed and fencing storage on the cattle blocks north toward the Auburn and Boyne, and a dry store on newly bought scrub blocks with no shed on them yet.

What the driver needs from the site

The town is straightforward. Wide streets, an easy grid, generous industrial frontages down toward the highway and enough room for a rigid truck to stand and unload without a fuss. Out of town it splits. The sandy rises and the old cypress country give you an approach that stays firm through most of the wet, which makes them the easiest properties on the Downs to deliver to in February. The trade-off comes afterwards, because sand carries poorly under a point load and a container corner concentrates a couple of tonne into an area the size of a dinner plate. It will settle, and it will do it unevenly. The brigalow and belah blocks are the opposite arrangement. Excellent bearing when dry, useless when wet, and slow to come back because the clay holds water rather than draining it. Melon hole country adds a wrinkle that catches people out. From the seat of a ute it reads as flat. It is not, and the depressions are just deep enough and just broad enough that a truck sets up in one without anybody noticing until the bed is up and the container is not going where it was meant to. Then the ordinary details: farm gates set out for a tractor rather than a truck with a wide bed, grids on private tracks with no rating and no history, table drains that a rear wheel can drop into, and irrigation mainlines and siphon pipe alongside headlands. On gas leases and station tracks the surface is often good, formed gravel that has been maintained, and the constraint is access permission and a gate key rather than the ground. Tell us at the enquiry whether the last kilometre is sand, clay or formed gravel, and whether anything is locked.

Grade moves the price more than size does, and it is what decides whether a unit is sold watertight — the full rundown is on the grades page.

The range

Containers we deliver to Chinchilla

Priced with delivery to your address - one call, one number.

10ft Shipping Containers

Side access is pinched, the setback leaves nothing to manoeuvre in, or all that is needed is a lockable spot for the mower, an air compressor and a wall of hand tools.

20ft Shipping Containers

There is about seven metres of straight, reasonably level ground for it to sit on, and you would rather not discover in half a year that the bigger box was the answer.

40ft Shipping Containers

You have the space, the approach is genuinely open, and the aim is the largest amount of storage per dollar spent that anybody sells.

Chinchilla

Sand that lets go and clay that holds on

The sandy rises around Chinchilla will take a truck in the middle of a wet week, which makes them a gift as far as delivery goes. What they will not do is hold a container level on their own. Sand drains fast and carries badly, so within a season or two of sitting straight on it the low corner has found its own level and the doors have started to bind. The fix is small: hardwood or concrete under each corner casting, dug in and checked on both diagonals, so the load spreads over a proper footprint instead of punching through. Do it on the day the container lands and you never think about it again. Sand also travels when water runs across it, so if the spot sits under a shed roof line with no gutter on it, either move the container or move the water.

The clay country is the reverse problem. Once it has taken up water it is genuinely unsafe to be driving a loaded truck across, and it stays that way for longer than most people expect, because brigalow soil does not shed water, it holds it. We would rather move a booking than put a truck onto it. If your place has a hard stand near the shed or a gravel apron by the road that stays firm regardless, tell us where it is and we will aim for that. Setting the container down on solid ground and letting you walk it into position with a tractor at your own pace is a perfectly normal way to do a delivery out here.

On the ground

Gas country storage that has to move again

A lot of the containers going into the Surat Basin are not staying anywhere permanently. A crew sets up near a lease, works it for eight or ten months, and moves on to the next one. That is exactly what a container is good at and exactly what a shed is not. It can be craned onto a truck and be at the next site the same week, it locks, it keeps dust and rain off consumables and hand tools, and it does not leave you arguing about make-good at the end of an access agreement. The same logic works further down the scale. A mobile fitter or an auto electrician running out of a ute and a trailer gets a lockable base on site, and takes it with them when the contract finishes instead of renting a shed in town they only half use.

Two things are worth thinking about at the order rather than later. First, hire against purchase. If the work has a program with an end date on it, hire keeps the asset off your books and makes the removal somebody else's problem. If the container is going to follow the crew around for years, buying is cheaper by a long way. Second, fit-out. Vents, an internal shelf line, a lockbox over the handle, a coat of paint that is not shipping-line livery if the client is fussy about how the laydown looks. All of that is easier to do here before the container leaves than out there afterwards, because out there it is a contractor, a trip and a day.

Worth knowing

Chinchilla travels with the Dalby run

Chinchilla sits about eighty kilometres past Dalby on the Warrego, and it is the far end of what we can reasonably do in a single day out of Cornubia. In practice that means Chinchilla loads travel with whatever else is going west that week, which is usually Dalby, Warra, Miles or Wandoan. Four to seven business days is the honest window. If two or three orders land together the run gets easy and the date firms up quickly. If yours is the only one, it waits for a truck heading that way, or it goes on its own and the cartage reflects that. We will tell you which of those it is when we quote, rather than giving you a date and finding a reason later.

The season matters as much as the schedule. Through the summer storms we deliberately keep a couple of days of movement in the western bookings, because putting a truck onto wet brigalow to hold a date does nobody any good. Ring 1300 467 776 with the address, the size and a rough description of the last kilometre and we will give you a realistic window on the call. It also helps to tell us if the container has to be on the ground before something else happens, whether that is a crop coming off, a crew arriving or a lease starting. Knowing the constraint is what lets us decide whether your box goes on this week's run or waits three days for a better one. Vague dates get vague answers out here. Specific ones almost always get a better result.

What delivery to Chinchilla costs

Delivery is priced with the container, not separately and not off a list. One phone call gets you the real number for your address.

The order of questions is always the same: what is it for, what grade does that need, and can a truck get in.

Also delivered nearby

We also deliver to Dalby, Miles, Wandoan, Tara, Condamine and the surrounding district. If your town is not on the list, ring — it almost certainly still works.

Common questions

Buying a container in Chinchilla

How long is delivery to Chinchilla?

Four to seven business days is normal. The container comes from our Cornubia yard south of Brisbane and Chinchilla is at the far end of a day's run west, so loads usually travel with other orders going to Dalby, Warra, Miles or Wandoan that week. A single container on its own can still go, it just goes as a dedicated trip. Summer storms will move a date, because we will not put a loaded truck onto wet brigalow country to hold a booking.

Can a container be moved again later if the job shifts?

Yes, and it is one of the main reasons gas field crews around here use them rather than building something. A container can be lifted onto a truck and relocated to the next site with a day's notice. Two things make it easier: leave enough clear space around it for a truck and a crane to work, and keep it level and off the ground on pads so the underside is not bedded into soil that has to be dug out before it can be lifted.

Will a container sink on sandy Chinchilla country?

On bare sand or thin turf over sand it will find its own level, and it will not do it evenly, because every corner casting drives a couple of tonne into a footprint the size of a dinner plate. That is what puts a frame out of square and starts the doors binding. Sleepers or concrete pads under each of the four corners, bedded in and checked across both diagonals, spread that load and end the problem for good. Flag the ground type on the order and the materials come out with the container.

Can you deliver to a property with a locked gate or a station track?

Yes, provided we know before the truck leaves. Locked gates, gate keys, access permissions on a lease, a grid with no rating, a track that needs a particular approach, stock that should be shifted first, or a requirement to ring ahead so somebody meets us. All of that is fine when it is arranged and a real problem when a driver finds it at four in the afternoon four hundred kilometres from the yard. Give us the details and a contact number at the booking.
