Shipping containers Mullumbimby

The town is not the problem. Mullumbimby itself is a short grid you can deliver into on a Tuesday morning without much thought. It is what happens after you turn off the flat that decides everything, because within ten minutes of the main street you can be on a one-lane bridge, then a causeway, then four kilometres of red dirt climbing a spur with a rainforest canopy meeting overhead. We do those runs regularly. We just want to know which one we are on before a truck leaves the yard, not when it is halfway up.

The bit that is specific to here, first.

What the containers get used for locally

Around Mullumbimby we deliver containers for macadamia and avocado harvest gear, bins and orchard equipment through the Brunswick Valley, tools, timber and materials for owner-builders working slowly on a hinterland block, storage for the market stallholders and small-batch food and beverage makers the shire is full of, feed, tack and fencing on the small holdings out through Wilsons Creek and Upper Main Arm, shared equipment and supplies on multiple-occupancy properties where nobody has a big enough shed, gear for the festivals and events that come and go, and a dry lock-up on a block where a shed would mean starting a planning conversation.

Getting a truck in

Everything about a hinterland delivery here is decided by the road in. The valleys behind Mullumbimby, through Main Arm, Upper Main Arm, Wilsons Creek, Huonbrook, Goonengerry and Federal, are narrow, steep and stitched with watercourses. There are one-lane bridges with weight and width limits posted on them, and there are causeways rather than bridges on plenty of the crossings, which come up quickly after rain in the range above you even when it has not rained where you are standing. A causeway with water over it is not a maybe for a loaded truck, it is a no, and it can stay a no for a day or two after the sky clears. There are also stretches that have been repaired since the 2022 slips and are narrower or rougher than they were. The surface is the second factor. This is red basalt country and the sealed sections give way to formed gravel and then to red dirt fast. Red basalt is superb ground when dry and genuinely greasy within minutes of a shower, particularly on a climb with a camber to it, and a loaded rigid truck loses traction long before an unloaded one does. Overhead is the third. The canopy through these valleys is subtropical rainforest, camphor laurel and big old figs, and it hangs low over the road in long stretches. A tilt-tray needs its bed raised high before a container comes off, so clear air above matters as much as clear road ahead. Then the blocks themselves. Long shared driveways with a crown and table drains. Gates set at an angle to the track. Turning space at the far end that has to be real rather than hopeful, because reversing a rigid truck four kilometres back down a spur road in the dark is nobody's idea of an afternoon. And rock ledges and side-cut benches where the container has to sit, which is a levelling job rather than a drop. A 20ft handles almost all of this. A 40ft is a proper conversation and quite often the honest answer is two 20ft.

Grade moves the price more than size does, and it is what decides whether a unit is sold watertight — the full rundown is on the grades page.

The range

Containers we deliver to Mullumbimby

Priced with delivery to your address - one call, one number.

10ft Shipping Containers

Side access is pinched, the setback leaves nothing to manoeuvre in, or all that is needed is a lockable spot for the mower, an air compressor and a wall of hand tools.

20ft Shipping Containers

There is about seven metres of straight, reasonably level ground for it to sit on, and you would rather not discover in half a year that the bigger box was the answer.

40ft Shipping Containers

You have the space, the approach is genuinely open, and the aim is the largest amount of storage per dollar spent that anybody sells.

Mullumbimby

One-lane bridges, causeways and the date that moves

We would rather ring you and shift a delivery by two days than send a loaded truck at a rising causeway or onto a red dirt climb that has gone to grease. Nobody wins from a bogged truck. Not you, watching it cut a trench across your access and wondering who is paying for the tractor, and not us, with a truck and a driver tied up for the rest of the day and a container sitting somewhere it was never meant to be. So we build a bit of slack into hinterland bookings, particularly through summer, and we ring and tell you what is happening rather than leaving you at home waiting for something that was never going to make it.

Your local knowledge is worth more than any map here. You know which of your crossings goes over first and how long it takes to drop. You know whether the gravel section on your road holds together or turns. You know that the bridge on the way in has a limit posted on it, and what that limit is. Tell us at the booking. If there is a firm alternative, a neighbour's sealed access, a hardstand near the bitumen, a spot by the shed that stays solid whatever the weather, that is often the difference between this week and next. And if the road has just been graded, say so, because a freshly graded surface has no bind in it and will not hold a loaded truck until traffic and a bit of weather have worked it.

On the ground

Shared access, shared decisions

A lot of land around Mullumbimby is held as multiple occupancy or community title, and that changes a delivery in ways a suburban address never does. The access track is shared, so it is somebody's job to maintain it and it may not be the person ordering the container. There can be a gate arrangement, a locked chain, an agreed speed on the track and a group that expects notice before a twenty-tonne truck comes through. There may also be an internal decision to make about where a container can sit, which is a slower process than ringing us.

None of that is a problem, it just needs to happen before the booking rather than after. Sort out who is opening the gate, whether the track is passable for a rigid truck in its current condition, whether anyone needs notice, and exactly where the container is going. Then ring us with the answers. The other thing worth raising early is size, because on a shared track the constraint is usually the tightest corner on the whole run rather than anything on your own patch, and that corner may be a kilometre from your building envelope.

Worth knowing

Levelling on a side-cut bench

Almost nothing in these valleys is level, and a container does not need it to be. What it needs is four corners at the same height. On a hillside block that means building the low side up with stacked hardwood sleepers or pads set into the fall, rather than cutting the high side away. Cutting in feels tidier and is a mistake, because it creates a shelf that water runs along and ponds against the bottom rail every time it rains, and on this country it rains properly.

Red basalt is firm to carry a load once it is dry, but it holds water and it will let a concentrated point load down if there is nothing spreading it, so the pads want to be wider than they look necessary. Put the door end on the high side of the fall so the doors swing with gravity rather than against it, keep the grass down and the underside clear so air and water can get away, and sweep the leaf litter off the roof if it is going in under canopy, because wet leaves held against a roof panel for six months is what actually starts corrosion. Get all that right on the day and the unit will still be square and opening cleanly in twenty years.

What delivery to Mullumbimby costs

We quote delivery with the container every time. It is the honest way to do it when access varies as much as it does around here.

One call sorts it. Size, grade, where it is going and what the entry looks like — that is everything we need to price it properly.

Elsewhere in the district

We also deliver to Brunswick Heads, Byron Bay, Ocean Shores, Bangalow, Billinudgel and the surrounding district. If your town is not on the list, ring — it almost certainly still works.

Common questions

Buying a container in Mullumbimby

Can you deliver up Main Arm or Wilsons Creek?

Yes, and we do it regularly, but the road decides the size and the date. Those runs have one-lane bridges with posted limits, causeways that come up fast after rain in the range above, sections repaired since the 2022 slips that are narrower than they used to be, and low rainforest canopy over long stretches. A 20ft on a tilt-tray is the reliable option. Tell us at the enquiry which crossings are on your approach and how they behave after rain, and send a photo from the gate looking down the track.

Why does the wet weather move my delivery when it is not raining at my place?

Because the water that closes your causeway usually fell somewhere above you. Rain in the range behind Mullumbimby runs into the creeks and puts crossings under in the valleys below with a clear sky overhead. On top of that, red basalt gravel goes slick within minutes of a shower and stays that way on a shaded climb long after the surface looks dry. We build slack into hinterland bookings through summer for exactly that reason, and we ring rather than leaving you waiting on a truck that will not make it.

Can I get a 40ft container onto a hinterland block?

Sometimes, and the limiting factor is almost never the block. It is the tightest corner, the narrowest bridge and the lowest branch between the highway and your gate. A 40ft on a side loader is a very different vehicle to a 20ft on a tilt-tray and on a lot of these roads it simply will not get there safely. Where you genuinely need the length, two 20ft placed end to end usually delivers more useful and more flexible space with a far simpler delivery, and you can put a roof across the gap and gain a covered bay.

The access track is shared with other properties. What do you need from us?

Four things, and all of them before the booking rather than on the day. Who is opening the gate and will they be there. Whether the track in its current condition will carry a loaded rigid truck the whole way, including any bridges or causeways. Whether the other residents need notice. And exactly where the container is going, since on community-title land that is often a decision for the group rather than for one household. Sort those out, ring us with the answers, and the delivery itself is usually the easy part of the day.
