Bathurst town is easier than most inland centres because the older streets were laid out wide, so a rigid truck can generally stand where it needs to. The constraints sit around the edges. The heritage streets near the centre have short pitched driveways, verandah posts and awnings close to the footpath, mature exotic street trees with low limbs, and side gates set out long before a modern truck existed — plenty of those are crane jobs rather than tilt jobs. The newer estates at Kelso, Eglinton and Windradyne bring the standard pattern: narrow carriageways, cars parked both sides, stormwater grates and service pits on the kerb line that a loaded rear axle will crack, and cut-and-fill blocks with thin turf over young ground that has not been through enough wet and dry cycles to settle. Out of town it is granite and cold. The granite country gives firm footing and almost no level ground, and there is often rock ledge just under the surface, which is excellent for bearing a load and inconvenient when you want a pad set exactly where you planned it. Frost is the real scheduling factor. Hard frost sets a paddock track solid overnight and then thaws it to grease through the morning, so a winter delivery onto unsealed ground gets booked for a sensible hour rather than first thing, and heavy fog on the plain can hold a start back regardless. The Macquarie flats through town and downstream hold water and stay soft after rain. Approaches from the east come over the Great Western and the descent off the range is a genuine grade for a loaded truck, which is one more reason a Bathurst run is planned rather than squeezed in at the end of a day.

For one week in October the town does something no other regional centre in the state does. The population multiplies several times over, the approaches fill up, accommodation disappears and the local road network runs at a level it was never built for. A container truck trying to keep a delivery schedule through that week is not a plan, it is a hope. We say this plainly because people forget until it is on top of them.
If you want a container on the ground for the event — extra secure storage for a club, a team, a camping group, a vendor or a property being used for the week — order it well ahead and take delivery a fortnight early. It costs nothing to have it sitting there and it removes the one variable you cannot control. The same goes in reverse: if you are storing gear away afterwards, a booking a week or two after the event is a much smoother run than one made in the middle of it.

A frost hollow and what it does inside the box
Bathurst is famously cold on a clear winter night and a shipping container responds to that in a way people are rarely warned about. The shell drops below the dew point of the air sealed inside, moisture condenses along the underside of the roof and drips. Boxes go soft, tools show surface rust, fabric and paper take up damp, and it all looks exactly like a leaking roof to anyone who has not seen it before.
It is straightforward to prevent. Vents at both ends so air moves through rather than sitting still. Pads under the four corners so the floor is not in contact with cold damp ground. Load everything dry, keep an air gap between the stack and the walls, use pallets rather than putting cartons straight on the floor, and run moisture absorbers through the winter months. If the container is becoming a workshop, a hobby space or a store for anything sensitive, insulate the ceiling. That keeps the steel above dew point and ends the problem rather than managing it every winter.

Granite, slope and levelling it once
Very little ground around Bathurst is naturally level, and a container does not need it to be. What it needs is four corners at the same height. On a slope, build the low side up with stacked hardwood or set pads into the fall. Do not cut a shelf out of the high side — that creates a channel that holds water against the bottom rail for the life of the unit, which is the one thing you do not want on cold, wet ground.
Granite country actually makes this easier once you find your levels, because the bearing is excellent and the pads will not sink into it. What it does mean is that where you want a pad and where the rock lets you have one are not always the same place, so we set out on site rather than to a drawing. Put the door end on the high side so the doors swing with gravity, keep the underside open so air moves and water drains away, and check it is square across both diagonals before the truck leaves. Done once on delivery, it stays that way for decades.

The practical issue is placement — you may not be able to put a pad exactly where you planned if there is rock in the way, so we set out on site rather than to a fixed measurement. The rule stays the same regardless: four corners at the same height, door end on the high side, underside kept open.
