What a shipping container costs in Australia — and what moves the number
The five things that set the price of a shipping container in Australia: grade, size, which depot it sits in, how it reaches you and what the market is doing.

There is a reason containers are on nearly every working property in the country. They are the only storage you can buy that arrives finished, seals on all six sides, holds up to dust and vermin, and can be picked up and put somewhere else when the operation changes. That last point is what separates them from a shed and it is worth planning around from the start.
A container on a rural block is easy to place and expensive to reposition, so spend ten minutes on this before the truck comes.
Put it where the truck can get to it again. The most common rural mistake is siting a container somewhere a delivery truck could just manage in the dry, then finding the same access has grown out, washed out or been fenced across when it is time to move it. Leave the run in.
Keep it out of the water's path. Not just the flood line — the everyday path water takes across a paddock after real rain. Standing water under a container rots the bottom rails and cross members, and that is what ends a container's life on land.
Think about the doors and the prevailing weather. Doors away from the driving rain and the dust. Doors visible from the house or the shed if security matters. And enough clear space in front — around 2.5 m — for the swing, which people forget when they tuck a unit against a fence line.
Mind the trees. Shade seems kind and is not. A container under trees stays damp, collects leaf litter in the roof corners and top rails, and eventually gets a limb through it. The most common storm damage to rural containers is a branch, not wind.
Away from the house for chemicals. Separation is the cheapest safety measure available.
Farm ground is more variable than a suburban block, and the ground decides whether the doors still shut in five years.

Whatever the ground, get the unit up off it. Pads under the four corner castings that raise the box 100 to 200 mm let air move underneath, which dries the steel after rain and takes some of the heat out of the condensation problem. Then keep the grass down under and around it — a whipper snipper twice a year genuinely adds years to a container's life on a paddock.
Storing farm chemicals in an ordinary container is common and it is often perfectly reasonable. It stops being reasonable at a threshold set by the class and the quantity you hold, and that threshold is set by regulation rather than by preference.
Above it, what is required is a purpose-built dangerous goods container: bunded floor to contain a spill, forced ventilation, compliant shelving and fittings, and correct placarding. Your chemical reseller, your farm assurance scheme and your insurer will all have a view, and the useful move is to ask them what class and quantity you are actually holding before you buy the container.
Even below the threshold, three habits are worth having. Ventilate — heat and vapour build up in a sealed steel box in summer. Bund anything liquid, even improvised with a tray. And do not store chemical alongside feed, seed or anything that goes near stock.
The reason feed goes in containers is that mice and rats cannot chew through 2 mm steel. What they can do is walk through a gap, and a container's gaps are all at the door end.
Done properly, a sound container is the best vermin-resistant store on a farm by a wide margin.
Plenty of properties shift containers with their own gear, and it is legitimate work if it is done with the right equipment and respect for the load.
The container is designed to be lifted by its eight corner castings and by nothing else. Skidding a unit with a chain around the rails, or lifting with forks under the floor, distorts the frame — and a distorted frame means doors that never seat again. If you are using a telehandler or a loader, use proper lifting attachments engaged in the castings, keep the load low, and remember that an empty 20ft is still over two tonne and a 40ft is close to four.
Two things settle whether it is worth doing yourself. Is the unit genuinely empty, and are the corner castings and bottom rails sound? If either answer is uncertain, that is a job for a truck. A bare container on a rural block, sitting empty, is a wind consideration in the northern regions and on exposed sites anywhere. A container with a lean-to bolted to the side, or two containers with a roof spanning between them, is a wind consideration everywhere. That roof is a wing, and it lifts.
If you build one, treat it as a structure that needs designing for your wind region, and anchor both containers at the corner castings. This is the single most common cause of container damage on properties, and it is entirely preventable.
Two practical points for anyone ordering to a property rather than a street address.
First, describe the access honestly, including the last few kilometres. Gate widths, cattle grids, causeways, the corner at the top of the ridge, the bit that turns to soup after rain, and how long it takes to dry. A truck that arrives and cannot get in is the single most expensive outcome in this business and it is nearly always avoidable with a phone call.
Second, ask where the unit is coming from. Stock sits at Cornubia and at depots through Gympie, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns, Grafton, Darwin and Fremantle, and the closest one to you is usually the sensible source.
